Joining the Locher lab

There are always opportunities to join our research group as a postdoctoral researcher, PhD student, or Master student. We do not specifically advertise open positions, because the number of qualified applicants usually exceeds the available positions.
Applicants who wish to join the group should remember that we never respond if an application is obviously a mass E-mailing. Such applications will not be taken into consideration.

Applicants for post-doctoral positions: Experience with membrane proteins (expression and purification) is definitely an advantage, but not absolutely required. Expertise in mammalian or insect cell cultures and/or yeast expression is also a plus, as is previous expertise with proteoliposomes and liposome-based assays. Available projects range from determining new structures of membrane proteins to studying the structure-function relationship using various biochemical and biophysical techniques. For applications and inquiries please contact me by Email (locher@mol.biol.ethz.ch, all correspondence in English please) and attach your CV and a brief (half page) description of your research interests.

Applicants for positions of PhD or Master students: Students will have the opportunity to learn a variety of state-of-the-art biochemical techniques, including recombinant DNA techniques; Overexpression and purification of sensitive and dynamic membrane proteins; Functional reconstitution of membrane proteins in proteoliposomes and liposome-based activity assays; Biophysical and spectroscopic characterization of proteins (e.g. fluorescence spectroscopy, EPR); Crystallization using robotics; X-ray data collection and protein structure determination. Students should be exceptionally motivated to work on challenging, cutting edge research projects in a stimulating, international team. You may apply to me directly by Email (locher@mol.biol.ethz.ch, all correspondence in English please) or through the Biomolecular Structure and Mechanism section of the PhD program. When applying directly, please outline your previous research (M. Sc. or diploma thesis) and write a paragraph describing your research interests. Experience with membrane proteins is not required.

For all questions regarding hiring, please contact me by Email (locher@mol.biol.ethz.ch).
