EZ Perl Data Base Help

Introduction

If you miss 'Umlaute' in the browser - set character encoding to 'Western (Windows-1252). Auto-detect has to be off for this to work.

It is now possible to upload the manuscript in .pdf format and create a link to it in the database. The additional field 'Manu' should be used to enter the exact name of the manuscript, supplemental info file, revised manuscripts, etc. which can be uploaded (must be .pdf file) with the upload knob in the header line. Please use only the file name in the data base entry - not the whole path. You need the same userid/password combination as in the database itself.

• This data base is used for tracking manuscript submissions to the Journal of Biomolecular NMR.
• Each editor is working on it's own data base.
• Kurt Wüthrich's secretaries have access to the data bases of all editors.
• I am using an old version of EZ Perl because in this version the data base is text based only and so it's much easier for me to manipulate it if needed. That's the reason why I had to prepare this help, the help page on EZPerl describes the new data base which is based on a real data base program.

How to start

• Go to http://www.mol.biol.ethz.ch/cgi-bin/jdb/jdb.cgi
• Click the 'Login' button and enter your user ID and the password.
• As an Editor you will be offered to connect to your data base only. The supervisors (Kurt Wüthrichs secretaries) can select the data base of any of the editors.
• Your data base will be presented for connection - click 'Connect' on the data base selector (not the 'Connect' in the header line!). An indication should appear that you are connected to the correct data base.
• For editors only the first four knobs (Add, Search, Delete, Modify) in the header line are of interest.
  • Add - is used for adding a new record to the data base.
  • Search - is to display selected records or the whole content of the data base.
  • Delete - to get rid of records.
  • Modify - to modify records.

Add record

• Simply click on 'Add' an fill out the form. Please enter a single dot '.' in empty fields - that is not mandatory but the table of records created from EZDB looks much nicer this way!

Search, modify, delete records

• All three operations will present to you a mask where you can enter regular expressions (see box) for your search. But you may as well just click 'submit' on the mask and you will see all records of the data base.
• Now you can choose the record to work on in the rightmost column. Depending on the mode you have chosen you can delete, modify, or search records.

Syntax for searches

Here is the correct syntax for search operations: field_name operator keyword

=^ begin with for strings
=~ contains for strings
!= not equal for strings
!^ do not begin with for strings

Options

• The search can be case sensitive.
• You can use AND or OR connectors: AND will only return records matching all the keywords submitted.
• Order by date of insertion: By default, the search result is sorted alphabetically. If you check this box, the result will be sorted by the date of insertion (more recent record are shown first).
• Max number of record retrieved: this limits the number of record retrieved by the search engine. The default value * retrieves everything.
